College Entrance Exams

Students who intend to enroll in a four-year college are encouraged to take the ACT or SAT as soon as possible.  Students are strongly encouraged to take the same test twice in order to maximize scores. There is no need to take both tests. Students should visit each website to practice sample questions in order to determine which test is best suited for the students’ needs. Colleges accept either exam.

ACT – actstudent.org     SAT – collegeboard.com

Review information:  http://www.reviews.com/act-sat-test-prep-courses/

Waivers

Seniors who are requesting a college entrance exam waiver must first obtain an income verification letter which must be signed by a guardian and returned to the school.  Mrs. Lambert will issue waivers to students before school.  Due to the large number of eligible students, students may obtain one waiver for the ACT or SAT per year.

College application waivers may be obtained at any time in the counseling office. Students must check with the schools to which they are applying to determine if the school will accept the application waiver.

Transcripts

Students may request official transcripts to be mailed to colleges in the counseling office.  The cost for students who are currently enrolled is $3.  Transcripts requested at the school will be processed on Thursday of each week if requested by Wednesday.  Families may also order transcripts online using the following website: parchment.com/studentkit .  The fee is $3.50.

Recommendations

Students are encouraged to request recommendations from teachers who are familiar with them well in advance.  If a student is requesting a letter of recommendation from the counselor the student must submit a brag sheet (obtained in the counseling office) at least two weeks in advance.  Please be aware that I can only supply truthful recommendations that include my honest opinion.

Financial Aid, Scholarships, and HOPE

Families are encouraged to begin their scholarship search now.  Useful websites include fastweb.com , collegenet.com , youcango.collegeboard.org and fafsa.gov .  For seniors graduating in 2017 and after, students must earn a 3.0 GPA on core courses as calculated by GSFC and pass four courses on the “Rigor” list in order to be eligible for HOPE.  Students must have a valid social security number in school records and must check their final HOPE eligibility using the GaFutures account.
